![]() ![]() ![]() More recent mapmakers, like the Babylonians, did tell of mythical beasts in their maps, and the ancient Greeks traveled the world they knew in the spirit of cartography. Their maps date back to the Paleolithic Period, when woolly mammoths ( Mammuthus primogenius) roamed Earth along with ancient hominins who lived during the Stone Age (at least 2.5 million to about 12,000 years ago). Although there were no dragons, and the inscription “Here Be Dragons” was virtually never used, some of the (purported) earliest mapmakers did have to deal with real and formidable megafauna. Unfortunately, however, it appears that, apart from an inscription on a single, 16th-century globe, this claim is unfounded. Medieval mapmakers supposedly inscribed the phrase “Here Be Dragons” on maps showing unknown regions of the world. ![]()
